Fullerton holds top spot in National, San Diego Mesa new American No. 1 in third CCCAA/CCCFCA poll
Oct 03, 2017
Defending state champion Fullerton's winning streak continued while LA Valley's came to an end this past weekend. With that, the Hornets retain their grip on the top spot in the National Division while San Diego Mesa takes over the No. 1 ranking in the American Division in this week's California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA)/California Community Colleges Football Coaches Association (CCCFCA) Regional State Football Poll.
Fullerton's has won 11 straight games, including last season's run to the state title. The Hornets rolled to a 57-0 rout over Moorpark in their final non-conference game on Saturday. Fullerton received all six first-place votes in this week's poll on their way to 90 points. The Hornets, like a majority of teams in the SCFA, will have a bye next week.
Undefeated Riverside (5-0) is right behind waiting for their chance to take the top spot at the No. 2 position. The Tigers picked up 74 points following their 31-20 win at Cerritos. Mt. San Antonio (4-1, 71 pts), Saddleback (4-1, 67 pts), and Canyons (4-1, 66 pts) round out the National top five.
San Diego Mesa received two of six first-place votes on its way to 83 points and the No. 1 spot in the American poll. The Olympians improved to 4-1 after cruising to a 31-13 victory at LA Pierce.
Previous No. 1 LA Valley (3-1) had its 19-game unbeaten streak snapped after a narrow 10-6 loss at Victor Valley (3-1). VVC jumped ahead of LA Valley in this week's American poll, earning three first-place votes and 82 points to move to No. 2. LA Valley fell to the third spot with 81 points and one first-place vote.
Southwestern (3-2, 68 pts) and Allan Hancock (3-2, 65 pts) sit in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots respectively to close out the top five.
The 2017 California Community College Football Poll is a service of the California Community College Athletic Association and the California Community Colleges Football Coaches Association. The poll is recognized as the official regional state ranking and will be used for selection of post-season and bowl game participants.
