With the playoffs fast approaching, the San Diego Mesa women’s beach volleyball team is coming off two impressive 3–2 wins over Miramar College and Palomar College on Friday, despite battling injuries to several key players.

There’s a saying that always holds true late in the season, especially for teams with playoff hopes: everyone is dealing with injuries. What eventually separates teams is their ability to overcome adversity and find ways to win. This year’s squad has faced its share of challenges all season long, and this past week was no different. In one instance, a player had to be rushed to the emergency room after experiencing throat swelling leading to difficulty breathing.

Against Miramar College, Mia Lundberg and Layla Folkers rebounded after dropping the first set to win the next two, 24–22 and 15–13. Bella Town and Trina Nguyen delivered a solid 21–16, 21–12 victory, while the No. 5 pair of Lily Rosales and Jovi Harmon secured the team win with a commanding 21–12, 21–11 performance.

In a similar 3–2 battle against Palomar College, Bella Town and Trina Nguyen were dominant at the No. 3 position, earning a 21–12, 21–11 victory over Merrill and Daniels. At No. 4, Hannah Hetrick and Ruby Ennis controlled their match from start to finish, winning 21–11, 21–11. Once again, the No. 5 duo of Lily Rosales and Jovi Harmon came through  with a 21–13, 21–12 win.

Head coach Kim Lester praised her team’s effort, saying, “All the players did a great job stepping in, and I’m proud of the way they all played.” She also talked about the importance of improving health, being more consistent, and communication as the team prepares for the postseason.

This is traditionally the point in the season when the program begins to come together. With an experienced coaching staff and strong leadership on the roster, the team should make a strong playoff run. Lester knows their postseason potential, but success will require a complete team effort, with every player ready to step up when called upon.
