A new chapter begins for the San Diego Mesa College women’s basketball program under interim head coach Careth Herron. After spending the past few seasons on the staff, Herron takes over following Lindsay Samaniego’s departure to become athletic director at Moorpark College.
Last year, the Olympians finished 20-10 overall and 9-5 in conference play, placing third behind Palomar and Grossmont. The team often battled through injuries that left them with a short bench, but this season, Mesa enters with a full 16-player roster, giving the program more depth and balance.
The Olympians will look to replace five key players from last season, Kendal Alloway, AJ Marquez, Rayleen Moreno, Live Gillespie, and Christina Bowen. Alloway will continue her career at Cal State San Bernardino.
Herron is confident in the new group she’s brought together. “We have an awesome group of freshmen who will make a big impact, and four transfers who have fit right in with our team culture,” she said. Herron describes this year’s roster as athletic, competitive, and exciting to watch.
A major focus early in the season will be finding the right combinations of returners and newcomers. Herron credits her veteran players for taking on leadership roles and helping guide the younger athletes both on and off the court.
“Our team has already built strong chemistry and a positive environment,” Herron said. “Our philosophy is simple, a team-first mindset. We want to play together and compete as one unit every night.”
San Diego Mesa will open the season on Saturday, November 1, at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga. With added depth, energy, and experience, the Olympians look ready to make another strong run in conference play.
