After missing out on the podium last year, the San Diego Mesa College women's track and field team bounced back, claiming third place at the 2025 3C2A State Championships this past weekend at College of San Mateo.
The Olympians finished with 74 points. Riverside City College edged out Mesa for second with 75 points, and Modesto College took the top spot, scoring 91.50.
The team had a 1-2 punch in the 800 meter. Sophomore Joelle Tonne claimed the top spot, taking the state title in 2:17.17. Right behind her, freshman teammate Jazzlyn Islas placed second with a time of 2:18.99.
“Our women’s team did an outstanding job and executed as a team,” states head coach Sean Ricketts. “They showed up and competed on two cold and windy days. They performed and did what we asked of them.” Ricketts also adds that this women’s team is one of the best well-rounded teams he’s had at Mesa, which is a good sign on the programs trend for the future. Over the last three years, the women’s team has placed third twice in the last three years.
