Women's track compete at Kamaka Invitational, Pesch sets new PR

Both the San Diego Mesa College men’s and women’s track and field teams traveled north to Walnut, California, to compete in the annual Ron Kamaka Invitational at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.

The meet honors Coach Ron Kamaka, the longtime Mt. San Antonio College men’s cross country and track and field head coach. During his career, Kamaka led the Mounties to five CCCAA State Championships and earned numerous awards, including three SCC All-Sports Coach of the Year honors and recognition as the Men’s Track and Field State Coach of the Year. He passed away on March 6, 2022, following a battle with COVID-19.

Sterling Bryant delivered a standout performance, setting a new school record in the 110-meter hurdles. The freshman from Ramona High School clocked a 14.22, earning a State A qualifying mark. On the women’s side, sophomore Emily Pesch recorded a personal best in the heptathlon, scoring 3,882 points to achieve a State A mark.

Mesa competes in the Ron Kamaka Invitational each year to honor Coach Kamaka’s legacy. The meet also serves as an important opportunity for athletes to become familiar with Hilmer Lodge Stadium, the site of the CCCAA State Championships.
